CPRW has hit back at Welsh Labour leader Ken Skates' call to revive the M4 relief road across the Gwent Levels, arguing the route would cause irreparable damage to a protected landscape and its biodiversity. The charity points to an Arup report commissioned by the Welsh Government that examined eight options and concluded the original black route is no longer viable. Skates previously said in March, while Transport Minister, that the relief road's time had 'been and gone' and that the cost was enormous. He now says there is 'no other option' to fix congestion around Newport. The original scheme was dropped in 2019 by then First Minister Mark Drakeford on financial and environmental grounds, including carbon emissions. The Welsh Government has started an 18-month study into road-based solutions, including widening the Brynglas Tunnels and closing some junctions. CPRW is also asking for clarity on whether funding tied to the Burns recommendations for public transport has been fully used. The decision will test how Wales balances road capacity with its low-carbon commitments.
