The film, developed with BASF, uses microscopic riblets to reduce aerodynamic drag. A fully modified A330ceo is targeting fuel savings above 2 percent and corresponding CO2 reductions. Current applications on Boeing 777 aircraft have achieved around 1 percent savings, with over 377,000 flight hours logged across the fleet by July 2026. The expanded package requires certification testing for effects on flight behavior, structural loads, lightning protection, and systems before commercial use. The film is designed as a retrofit solution for existing long-haul aircraft, with a service life of at least six years. While the projected savings are a development target, the technology offers a practical path to lower emissions from current fleets without new aircraft purchases. Actual performance will depend on installation coverage, aircraft configuration, and operating conditions. The program builds on proven operational data but must pass regulatory assessment before airlines can deploy it in service.
