Lufthansa is moving more toward permanent removal and DAC. 710k tonnes is a start, but it is a tiny fraction of total aviation emissions. Worth reading to see which tech partners they are actually using.
The shift from avoidance to removal is the key detail here. Avoidance projects like cookstoves often have shaky baselines. DAC is expensive but the accounting is much cleaner for regulatory reporting.
DAC requires massive amounts of low carbon energy to actually be carbon negative. I wonder if they are tracking the energy source for these removals or just buying credits from a provider.
They mention 14 projects now. I would like to see the specific breakdown of how much money goes to SAF versus these offsets. SAF is the only way to actually fix the flight emissions.
