LTi Vessco, a Bridgend based engineering firm, has secured a contract worth over GBP 4.5 million from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to build a key vessel for the Padeswood carbon capture facility in North Wales. The regenerator column, 56 meters long and over five meters in diameter, will separate captured CO2 from the absorber compound before the gas is sent through the HyNet pipeline for permanent offshore storage. The facility is expected to capture around 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from cement production. The contract highlights the role of UK manufacturing in delivering large scale carbon capture infrastructure. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is supplying the capture technology, while Worley will construct the facility. UK has GBP 20bn committed to CCS clusters via the CCUS programme. But the business model relies on a contract for difference plus the carbon price. If the carbon price drops, the subsidy bill goes up. That is the real risk.

Good to see a Welsh firm landing a tier 1 contract on a flagship CCS project. But 800kt is a drop in the bucket for UK cement emissions. Need multiple sites and faster permitting to scale this.

Cement is hard to decarbonize any other way. Process emissions from calcination are unavoidable. So CCS is one of the few options. But the energy penalty for capture is real. Hope they are using waste heat or something.

Mitsubishi supplying the capture tech and Worley building the plant. That is a solid consortium. The vessel itself is a big piece of fabrication work. Should keep LTi Vessco busy for a while.
