Researchers at the University of Birmingham have developed a perovskite catalyst that reduces the temperature required for thermochemical water splitting. By lowering the operating temperature by 500 degrees Celsius, this method allows hydrogen to be produced using waste heat from industrial plants like steel and cement factories. This approach aims to lower the cost of hydrogen compared to traditional electrolysis or methane reforming with carbon capture. Because it can be deployed locally at industrial sites, it reduces the need for expensive hydrogen transport and storage infrastructure.
