UK renewables developer Low Carbon has announced plans for a 500MW solar PV project with energy storage in West Oxfordshire. The West Oxfordshire Energy Park, near Langford and Little Faringdon, would be classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), meaning final approval falls to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero rather than local planning authorities. Public consultation is scheduled for early 2027. The project would rank among the largest solar sites in the UK, comparable to the 500MW Tillbridge solar project approved last year. Low Carbon has previous experience with NSIP-scale solar, including the 400MW Beacon Fen proposal in Lincolnshire and the sale of the 500MW Gate Burton project to EDF. The UK government is targeting 45-47GW of solar PV capacity by 2030, up from roughly 18GW deployed as of 2025. Given the project's size, it will require a Development Consent Order. The planning process for NSIPs is lengthy and can be contentious, so early community engagement and grid connection studies will be critical. The inclusion of storage also points to a growing trend of pairing large solar arrays with batteries to improve grid stability and project economics.
