The report notes that sub-Saharan Africa needs to connect roughly 90 million people per year to achieve universal electricity access by 2030, and that current grid quality remains poor with frequent outages. For mobile network operators, this means heavy reliance on diesel generators, which are costly, carbon intensive, and exposed to fuel price volatility. The report points to mini-grids, solar home systems, run-of-river hydropower, and advanced battery technologies like sodium-ion as viable alternatives for powering base stations, especially in rural areas where over 80% of the unelectrified population lives. It also highlights the need for power purchase agreements, renewable energy certificates, and green tariffs to build a robust renewable energy market. When renewable energy powers digital infrastructure, it can also benefit surrounding communities by improving clinic operations, school access to digital tools, and small business growth. The main barriers remain high upfront costs, logistical challenges, and the need for better collaboration between mobile network operators and energy developers to secure financing.
