The global ammonia industry is shifting as geopolitical instability and rising natural gas costs push producers toward low-carbon alternatives. Green ammonia made with renewable electricity and blue ammonia using carbon capture are both attracting major investment. These changes affect fertilizer supply chains for agriculture and open new uses for ammonia as a hydrogen carrier and low-emission fuel. China is becoming a key player in low-carbon ammonia development. Modular, smaller-scale production systems near farming regions could cut transport costs and improve supply reliability. Variable renewable power remains a challenge for continuous ammonia production, but flexible technologies are being developed to address that gap.
