UK renewable developer Low Carbon has started early development work on the Dengie Peninsula Energy Park in Essex, a proposed solar and energy storage project with a potential combined capacity of 1 GW. The site, near Bradwell-on-Sea, Dengie and Burnham-on-Crouch, could generate enough clean electricity to power more than 250,000 UK homes and avoid around 265,000 tonnes of CO2 per year once operational. The project is still at an early stage. Community engagement and consultation with landowners and local authorities are ongoing, with wider public consultation planned for early 2027. Because capacity exceeds 100 MW, the project is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, meaning it will need a Development Consent Order from the Planning Inspectorate, with a final decision by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. The proposal also includes new grid export infrastructure, which will be a key factor in whether the project delivers on time.
