Work crews were spotted inside the Love Canal landfill this week, prompting questions from nearby homeowners. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says the activity was routine maintenance of pump chambers that move leachate to a treatment facility. Workers used a vacuum truck to remove sediment, and blue barrels filled with carbon were placed nearby to capture vapors during the process.

Good reminder that Superfund sites never really go away. The carbon barrels are just vapor capture during pump maintenance, not a fix. The bigger question is whether the barrier drain is catching NAPL, and the DEC still has not answered that directly.

Routine maintenance at a capped landfill still needs vacuum trucks and hazmat suits. That tells you how much long-term monitoring costs after the cleanup is declared done. Anyone know how often these pump chambers need sediment removal?

The petition under NY administrative law is the interesting part. DEC says the containment system works as designed, but the design may not cover non-aqueous phase liquid. If that gap is real, the state should say so instead of repeating the same line.
