Louisiana residents question safety of CF Industries' proposed CO2 pipeline to Holden
1012industryreport.comA proposed 50-mile carbon dioxide pipeline by CF Industries, designed to carry 2.3 million tons of CO2 annually from a new ammonia plant in Modeste to an injection site in Holden, is facing pushback from residents in Ascension and Livingston parishes. Community members say they have received limited details on safety plans and emergency response, with some homes sitting just 30 yards from the planned route. The project's injection well permit is still under review by the Louisiana Department of Conservation and Energy. The concerns echo the 2020 CO2 pipeline rupture in Sartoria, Mississippi, which hospitalized 45 people and exposed gaps in evacuation procedures. Residents also worry that local emergency resources are too thin to handle a similar incident. The pipeline route was reportedly adjusted after complaints, though CF Industries has not explained the change. Louisiana is currently processing 23 active Class VI injection well applications, with three already permitted, and the Pelican Sequestration Hub in Holden would be the endpoint for this pipeline.
