Lotte is pushing biochar for these young farmers. It is a decent move for soil carbon sequestration, but I want to see the actual volume of biochar being distributed to know if it moves the needle on emissions.
The real question is whether these low carbon practices are tied to a formal certification or credit system. Without a standard for accounting the carbon sequestered via biochar, this is mostly a corporate social responsibility project.
Training 25 farmers is a start, but the bottleneck for eco friendly farming is usually the cost of transition and the risk of lower yields during the switch. Does Lotte offer any price guarantees for the low carbon produce?
They mentioned pop up events for top performers. That is marketing, not a systemic price floor. The farmers still carry the production risk while the retailer gets the green branding.
