Local newspaper The Daily Chronicle published a letter arguing that solar panels and wind turbines should not be called renewable because the equipment wears out and requires mining, manufacturing, and eventual replacement. The letter compares that to pasture that regrows on its own and to nuclear fuel reprocessing. The letter raises a real issue: renewable hardware has a lifecycle, and panel and blade waste need better recycling. But it conflates the energy source with the machines that capture it. Sunlight and wind renew on a daily basis, which is why the energy is classified as renewable. The physical assets are a separate supply chain problem. Readers interested in the debate should separate two questions. Is the fuel renewable? Yes. Can we build and dispose of the hardware responsibly? That still needs work.
