The Lobito Corridor has completed its first full copper shipment from the Kamoa-Kakula complex in the DRC to the Aurubis refinery in Belgium. The rail route through Angola offers a faster, lower-emission alternative to traditional export paths for Central African copper and cobalt, minerals essential for electric vehicles and renewable energy infrastructure. Ivanhoe Mines reports that the supply chain used largely renewable energy for processing, smelting, and refining, producing what the company calls one of the world's lowest carbon-intensive refined copper products. The corridor is backed by investments from the US, EU, Angola, Zambia, and the DRC. This milestone demonstrates a viable low-carbon export route for critical minerals from Africa to European markets. It also highlights how transport infrastructure can reduce the carbon footprint of mineral supply chains while improving access to materials needed for grid expansion, battery storage, and electrification.

This is interesting for the carbon angle. If the whole chain from mine to refinery runs on renewables, that copper carries a much lower embedded carbon footprint than most. Still want to see the actual emissions data per ton though.

The rail corridor itself is a big infrastructure win. But for the copper to actually be low carbon, the smelting and refining need clean grid power. Aurubis in Belgium is not exactly running on sunshine. Would like to see the full LCA.
