Commercial shipping is under pressure from IMO and FuelEU Maritime regulations to reduce emissions. While LNG is currently the primary transition fuel, its long term viability depends on the availability of low-carbon alternatives like biomethane and e-methane. Transitioning to these fuels requires significant investment in ship technology and bunkering infrastructure. However, high costs and limited supply of synthetic methane remain major hurdles for fleet operators aiming for net zero.

The gap between policy intent and reality is wide here. The IMO framework sets the goal, but until there is a global carbon price or a massive subsidy for e-methane, shipowners will stick to the cheapest fossil LNG. The incentives just aren't aligned yet.
Exactly. And the e-methane side requires a massive amount of renewable electricity for electrolysis. We can barely handle the grid load for land based industry, let alone scaling synthetic fuels for a global fleet. Where is the actual power coming from?
Interesting that LNG ships can be reconfigured for ammonia later. That flexibility is the only reason people are paying the 20 percent premium now. Without that hedge, nobody would touch this tech given the price of biomethane.
The retrofit cost is the real question. Converting a ship from LNG to ammonia is not a simple software update. I want to see the actual labor and dry dock costs for those conversions before calling it a viable hedge.
