London North Eastern Railway and Treeva are testing small wind turbines installed along the East Coast Main Line. These turbines capture the turbulent airflow created by passing trains to generate electricity for local station needs like lighting and CCTV. The pilot project at Craigentinny depot uses upcycled materials and operates independently of the national grid. Engineers will spend six months collecting data to determine if the technology can be scaled across the UK rail network to help operators reach zero carbon goals.
