Agreed. The dual fuel version got approval in 2023, now full hydrogen. The power range 900 to 2670 kW covers a lot of vessel types. Still early but the trajectory is clear.

Question is where the green hydrogen comes from at scale. Engine approval is necessary but not sufficient. Bunkering infrastructure and production cost will decide if this actually gets deployed.

Type approval from a class society is the regulatory green light. But without carbon pricing or mandates that make green hydrogen competitive with heavy fuel oil, adoption will be slow. Policy needs to catch up.

Retrofitting existing ships with hydrogen engines is a different challenge than new builds. This approval helps new builds. For retrofits, you need tank space, safety systems, and crew training. Cost per vessel will be high.
