Liverpool Bay CCS Ltd. has secured a seabed lease from The Crown Estate to develop the UK's first carbon capture and storage project that repurposes existing oil and gas infrastructure. The project will reuse over 75 miles of existing pipelines, three offshore structures, and an onshore treatment plant, plus build 21 miles of new pipeline to connect industrial emitters in the HyNet Cluster. Phase 1 targets storage of 4.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year, with potential to scale to 10 million tonnes per year after 2030. Initial customers include cement, low-carbon hydrogen, and energy-from-waste facilities. The project is expected to store 109 million tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime, support around 2,000 construction jobs, and unlock about 2 billion pounds in supply chain investment. This project demonstrates a practical path for decarbonizing heavy industry by converting legacy oil and gas assets into permanent CO2 storage. It also highlights the growing role of offshore leases and existing pipeline networks in scaling CCS infrastructure in the UK.
