Electric loaders and autonomous trucks look good in a demo, but the real bottleneck is the charging infrastructure at remote mine sites. I wonder what the actual peak load requirements are for these fleets and if the local grids can even handle the fast charging needed to keep them running.
That is where the subsidies come in. Most of these zero-carbon pushes depend on whether the government provides credits for the charging infrastructure or if the mining companies can write off the CapEx. Without a clear carbon price, the transition stays slow.
Curious about the maintenance costs here. Electric motors are simpler, but battery replacement cycles in harsh mining environments can be brutal. If the payback period is too long because of battery degradation, operators will stick to diesel.
LiuGong is pushing hard into the electric space. The story mentions a zero-carbon mining solution, but it is mostly a product showcase. It would be better to see the actual emissions reductions from the South African case study mentioned.
