This is the micro scale version of what we worry about with BESS installations. Energy density is great for portability but the failure modes are violent. Does the article mention if this was a certified product or a cheap knockoff?
Usually the cheap ones. But even certified cells can fail if the casing is crushed. In building management, we see this more with e-bike batteries in hallways. The fire load is way higher than old school electronics.
The mention of airlines banning these shows a gap in standardized safety labeling. We need better procurement rules for consumer energy storage so the end user knows exactly what the risk profile is.
