Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun in Cameroon have a history of releasing massive clouds of carbon dioxide, leading to thousands of deaths. Engineering teams have since implemented degassing pipes to safely remove CO2 and prevent future disasters. Lake Kivu, a much larger lake on the Rwanda-DRC border, holds significant amounts of dissolved CO2 and methane. While commercial projects like KivuWatt extract methane for electricity, the scale of the gas inventory remains a point of scientific monitoring and risk management.
