LG Chem expands blue carbon seagrass project and ESG education programs in South Korea

LG Chem is advancing its ESG strategy through two main initiatives: a blue carbon seagrass restoration project and the Green Connector education program. The seagrass project has transplanted 70,000 shoots over two years, aiming to expand the meadow to 10 hectares by 2026. The company estimates this will absorb about 5,000 tons of carbon annually, equivalent to emissions from 2,800 cars. Monitoring in the second year also found increased biodiversity with 32 species of large benthic animals in transplant areas. The Green Connector program includes Like Green, which provides ESG educational materials to schools and care institutions, and a YouTube channel called Daedamhae that covers environmental and social issues. LG Chem employees volunteer as educators, visiting community child centers and elementary schools. In 2024, they reached over 700 students across 19 locations nationwide. These efforts show how a major industrial company is combining carbon removal projects with community education to address climate change.

Interesting to see LG Chem putting real numbers on blue carbon. 5,000 tons a year from seagrass is modest but it's a start. Would like to know how they measure that.

The biodiversity bump is a nice co-benefit. 32 species of benthic animals in the transplant areas. That is the kind of detail that makes a project credible.

Seagrass restoration is slow and labor intensive. 70,000 shoots over two years to get 10 hectares. That is about 5 hectares a year. Not a quick fix for carbon.

Education programs like Green Class are hard to quantify. 700 students reached is a number but what changed? If they track behavior or career choices later it would mean more.

LG Chem is a chemical company. Their real carbon impact is in their operations and supply chain. This project is small relative to their footprint. Still, every bit helps.
