Lee Kum Kee Wins Hong Kong Packaging Reduction Gold Award, Cuts Glass and Carton Waste
asianews.networkLee Kum Kee received the Gold Award in Hong Kong's Packaging Reduction Charter, an EPD program that pushes companies to use less packaging and support the city's carbon neutrality goal. The sauce maker cut its 32-ounce oyster sauce bottle weight from 410 to 390 grams in 2025, saving 10 tonnes of glass for the year, and says improved carton designs save more than 200 tonnes of material annually. Over 95% of its packaging by weight is recyclable. The award is based on annual checks of packaging reduction, recyclability, reuse, and promotion. Lee Kum Kee is among more than 140 signatories and one of the first food companies to get the gold tier. It also appeared in the 2026 Golden Design Rules case study booklet from the Consumer Goods Forum. The company says the work ties to Hong Kong's longer-term carbon neutrality target, though the announcement does not quantify emissions avoided from the packaging changes.
