Leather carbon footprint 70% higher than thought, study finds: how it compares to vegan alternatives

The study, led by researchers at Cornell and NYU, calculates that a leather wallet carries emissions equivalent to roughly four beef burgers, while a leather tote bag compares to about 35 burgers. Pound for pound, bovine leather emits more than 12 times as much as vegan leathers made from polyurethane, mycelium, or plant-based materials. The higher estimate comes from correcting a Eurocentric accounting method that previously assigned hides only 0.42% of a cow's total farming emissions. Using global data and economic value allocation, the researchers found hides represent about 8.1% of the animal's value at slaughter. This means consumer demand for leather likely supports larger cattle herds and the associated deforestation, especially in the Amazon. The study challenges the idea that leather is a harmless byproduct and calls for more investment in bio-based leather alternatives.
