Leamington's Royal Spa Centre has installed 62 solar PV panels on its roof, expected to generate around 22,000 kWh of electricity each year and cut carbon emissions by 3.5 tonnes annually. The project used a vertically mounted array to work around structural constraints on the roof. A separate installation at Castle Farm Leisure Centre in Kenilworth added 177 panels, projected to generate 80,000 kWh and save 21 tonnes of CO2 per year. Combined energy bill savings for both buildings are estimated at about 14,000 pounds per year. The installations are part of Warwick District Council's Low-Cost Low-Carbon Energy Programme, which aims to lower energy bills and reduce emissions across council buildings. The Royal Spa Centre had already completed an LED lighting upgrade expected to cut electricity use by 30 percent. Councilor Hema Yellapragada, Portfolio Holder for Decarbonisation, said the work aligns with the council's priority of delivering low-cost, low-carbon energy for high-use public buildings.

22 MWh per year from 62 panels works out to about 355 kWh per panel annually. That seems low even for UK solar. Maybe the vertical mount cuts output or the roof orientation is bad.

355 kWh per panel is low. Typical UK rooftop panels do 400-450 kWh/year. The vertical mount probably cuts yield by 20-30 percent. Makes sense given the roof constraints though.

The 3.5 tonnes CO2 saved seems to assume grid average carbon intensity. If the UK grid keeps decarbonizing those savings shrink over the panel lifetime. Still better than nothing.

Worth noting this is part of a formal council program with a strategy behind it. That matters more than the individual install size. Replicable template for other districts.

The LED upgrade cutting 30 percent electricity use is probably the bigger win here. Solar on top of efficiency makes sense. Wonder what the payback period is on those panels.
