Latis Materials, a Saco-based startup, won the top prize at Central Maine Growth Council's Dirigo Labs pitch competition. The company uses a byproduct of paper production to create carbon fiber yarn, offering a lower-carbon alternative to conventional carbon fiber manufacturing. The $20,000 prize will fund equipment for a small-scale production line to turn prototypes into real products. The company was founded by twin brothers Aidan and Will Salisbury, both mechanical engineers with experience at MIT's Blueprint accelerator, Stanford's Eco-Sprint program, and the Roux Institute's Climate Tech Incubator. Their goal is to scale patented bio-based carbon fiber technology into a commercially viable U.S. manufacturing platform. Dirigo Labs accelerator alumni have collectively raised $35.6 million, generated nearly $17.4 million in sales, and launched 126 products and services. This year's cohort spanned AI, bioeconomy, advanced manufacturing, and blue economy sectors.
