Langbank ranchers win stewardship award for soil carbon gains through holistic grazing

Ralph and Linda Corcoran of Langbank, Saskatchewan, received the 2026 Environmental Stewardship Award from the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association. The award recognizes their use of holistic management practices that improved soil health and increased carbon sequestration on their ranch. Over 13 years of soil testing, carbon levels rose consistently, showing that managed grazing can store more carbon in the ground. The Corcorans doubled their cow herd without buying or renting more land by using high-density grazing and giving pasture adequate rest. They also mentor other ranchers through ranch tours and have passed the operation to their grandson. The approach ties land health directly to profitability and offers a practical model for carbon-friendly agriculture in the Canadian prairies.
