Lancaster University is now generating all its own electricity from renewables, thanks to an 11 MW solar farm, a wind turbine, and one of the UK's largest heat pump arrays. The university has cut its energy-related carbon emissions from 25,900 tonnes CO2e in 2005 to 10,900 tonnes in 2025, and expects to reach net zero by 2030. The solar farm includes an agrivoltaics field demonstrator to study how farming and solar generation can coexist. A new district heat network with 6.5 km of pipes will supply 95% of campus buildings, replacing gas use. The project is part funded by the UK Government's Green Heat Network Fund.
