Lambeth Approves 230-Metre Vauxhall Square Tower With Carbon Assessment Condition
streamlinefeed.co.keLambeth Council has approved the £2 billion Vauxhall Square redevelopment by a 4-3 vote. The plan includes a 230-metre tower, 1,097 flats, 1,164 co-living units, and 699 student rooms. Affordable housing was cut from 35% to 25% of the scheme, which drove three councillors to vote against it. The approval comes with a condition: each phase must complete a Whole Life Cycle Carbon Assessment before construction. That means embodied carbon in materials and construction will be measured against the London Plan target of 350 kg CO2 per square metre. The developer must repeat this process for all seven buildings, not just the tallest tower. Critics, including architect Mike Kane, called the project a major source of avoidable emissions. Supporters point to density and housing supply. The outcome depends on whether the carbon assessments have real enforcement and whether the affordable housing share can be improved in later stages.
