Lagos launches Nigeria's first state-level greenhouse gas registry for carbon tracking
pmnewsnigeria.comLagos State has become the first sub-national government in Nigeria to launch a Greenhouse Gas Registry, a digital platform for measuring, reporting, and verifying emissions across key sectors. The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) led the initiative with technical support from TPHG Technologies, using 2019 as the baseline year for the emissions inventory. The registry aims to improve transparency, support Nigeria's Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, and unlock carbon market opportunities. The platform is designed to close emissions data gaps, especially in the industrial sector, and guide climate policy. Officials noted that poor air quality contributes to about 35,000 premature deaths annually in Lagos, highlighting the need for stronger emissions control. The registry is expected to attract green investments and reinforce Lagos' position as a leader in climate action within Nigeria.
