Lagos launches first sub-national greenhouse gas registry in Nigeria for emissions tracking and climate finance
realnewsmagazine.netLagos State has launched the Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry (LGHGR), becoming the first sub-national government in Nigeria to set up a comprehensive system for measuring, reporting, and verifying greenhouse gas emissions. The registry, developed in partnership with TPHG Technologies, builds on a 2022 emissions inventory and aims to support evidence-based climate policy, attract green investment, and improve air quality management across key sectors of the state economy. The initiative aligns with Nigeria's Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement and the federal Energy Transition Plan. By providing credible emissions data, the registry is expected to open up carbon market opportunities and strengthen investor confidence in Lagos climate projects. The 2022 inventory estimated about 35,000 premature deaths annually in Lagos linked to poor air quality, underscoring the public health rationale for better emissions tracking. The launch event included representatives from LASEPA, the Federal Ministry of Environment, development partners, and the business community. The registry is positioned as a tool for transparency and accountability in climate governance, with potential to serve as a model for other sub-national governments in Africa.
