Ladakh has inaugurated its first five EV charging stations, located at the main bus stand in Leh, Tia Rong, Solar Colony, Chuchot Shamma, and Khaltsi. A sixth station near Magnetic Hill is nearly complete. Each station has two fast-charging guns that can charge an EV to 80 percent in 30 to 60 minutes, with fire safety and emergency shutdown systems included. The Lieutenant Governor said the move supports Ladakh's goal of becoming carbon neutral and reducing fossil fuel dependence in its fragile high-altitude ecosystem. The stations are a practical step for a region that relies heavily on tourism and faces unique environmental pressures. By building charging infrastructure along key routes, Ladakh is trying to make electric vehicles viable for both residents and visitors. The next question is whether the local grid can handle the load and whether enough EVs will actually show up to make the investment worthwhile.
