Ladakh has inaugurated its first electric vehicle charging stations, marking a concrete step toward the region's goal of becoming carbon neutral. Five stations are now operational at locations including the main bus stand in Leh, Tia Rong, Solar Colony, Chuchot Shamma, and Khaltsi. A sixth station near Magnetic Hill in Leh is nearly complete. Each station has two fast-charging guns that can bring an EV to 80 percent charge in 30 to 60 minutes. The stations also include fire safety measures and emergency shutdown systems. Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said the rollout supports the region's carbon neutral target and reduces reliance on fossil fuels in a fragile high altitude ecosystem. The administration is framing the network as the start of a broader EV infrastructure push. For now, the stations cover a handful of locations in and around Leh. The question is whether the network will expand fast enough to make EV adoption practical across Ladakh's remote and extreme terrain.
