Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated five electric vehicle charging stations across the union territory on July 10, 2026. The stations are located at Main Bus Stand Leh, Tia Rong, Solar Colony, Chuchot Shamma, and Khaltsi. A sixth station near Magnetic Hill in Leh is nearly complete. Each station has two fast charging guns that can bring a vehicle to 80 percent charge in 30 to 60 minutes. The stations also include fire safety measures and emergency shutdown systems. This is the first EV charging infrastructure in Ladakh, a region with a fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The administration framed the move as part of a broader goal to make Ladakh carbon neutral and reduce fossil fuel dependence. For residents and tourists, the network aims to remove range anxiety on high altitude routes. The practical question now is how much grid capacity and renewable generation will back these stations, especially in winter when solar output drops and tourism slows. If the power comes from diesel generators, the carbon benefit shrinks significantly.
