Agreed. The emissions comparison depends heavily on methane leakage rates and transport distance. UK offshore production has some of the lower upstream intensities globally but the gap narrows if you account for flaring and venting.

The Uplift quote is worth noting. Most of what is left in the North Sea is oil that gets exported. So the energy security argument for new licences is weak. The real question is how to manage the decline without stranding workers and communities. That is a policy design problem, not a drilling problem.

The chemical industry signatory is interesting. They need competitive gas prices for feedstocks. If domestic production declines faster than renewables and storage can replace it, industrial users will face higher costs. That is a real risk for reindustrialisation plans.
