Labor Rights Gaps in African Carbon Offset Projects

A new report from the Solidarity Center highlights how workers in African carbon offset projects are often misclassified as community participants. This classification denies them minimum wage, safety standards, and the right to unionize, even as these projects generate significant revenue for international buyers. The findings suggest a systemic lack of transparency in benefit sharing and project governance. While carbon markets are projected to grow significantly in Africa, the people performing the actual restoration and conservation work remain excluded from decision making and fair pay.
