Kuwait targets carbon neutrality by 2060, renewable share 50% by 2050, new government sustainability reporting
kuwaittimes.comKuwait is pushing a national sustainability agenda with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2060. The strategy includes expanding renewable energy to 50% of the mix by 2050, with projects like Al-Shaqaya (1,100 MW and 500 MW phases) and Abdalia. The government has also adopted a unified environmental sustainability reporting system for public entities, using 14 indicators to track energy, waste, water, and emissions performance. The Low Carbon Strategy 2050, launched with UNEP in November 2023, is now being paired with a national register of environmental risks and a draft third national communication under the Paris Agreement. The reporting system is set to produce annual government environmental reports starting in 2028. Afforestation, waste management, and eco-city plans are also in motion, along with 64 approved greening initiatives since December 2024. The real test is whether these targets translate into enforceable policy and actual grid integration. Watch for details on storage, grid upgrades, and how much of the 2060 neutrality relies on offsets versus direct emission cuts.
