Kutch Copper adds 115 MW renewables at Mundra as it targets 1 million tonne copper capacity and lower emissions
news.metal.comKutch Copper, an Adani Enterprises subsidiary, plans to add 115 MW of renewable power to its copper smelter and refinery at Mundra, Gujarat. The company currently runs a 500,000 tonne per year facility and wants to double capacity to 1 million tonnes, which would make it the world's largest custom copper smelter on one site. The move is part of a broader push that includes desalinated water use, zero liquid discharge, and treatment of 99.8% of sulfur emissions. The expansion matters for India's copper supply. Domestic refined copper output could rise if the project hits its timeline, reducing reliance on imports at a time when grid expansion, EVs, and renewables are driving demand. Kutch Copper also got LME registration for its grade A copper cathodes in July 2026, making them deliverable under LME contracts. Adani has committed USD 1.2 billion to the project. The real test is execution: renewable integration and capacity ramp need to actually land, not just be announced.
