KT is supplying renewable energy to Tokyo Electron Korea through a direct Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The deal starts with 15 MW of capacity in September and will scale up to 50 MW to cover the annual power needs of Tokyo Electron's research and manufacturing sites in Hwaseong, Yongin, and Seongnam. This agreement allows Tokyo Electron Korea to source green electricity directly from a supplier, bypassing traditional utility constraints. KT is utilizing its KT-Net Zero platform to monitor emissions and manage the renewable energy supply chain for the semiconductor equipment manufacturer.

The 50 MW figure is the capacity, but they do not mention the actual generation source or the capacity factor. Is this coming from new solar builds or existing wind farms? That determines if this actually adds new green electrons to the grid.

Semiconductor R&D centers are power hungry. Even with 50 MW, I wonder if they are looking at efficiency upgrades inside those Hwaseong sites or just buying their way to carbon neutrality via the PPA.

The key here is the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy approval for KT as a supply business operator. Direct PPAs in Korea have had regulatory hurdles, so seeing a telco act as the aggregator is an interesting shift in market design.
