Krill, ocean deoxygenation, and the carbon pump: a master's thesis project at the University of Oslo
uio.noThe University of Oslo is offering a master's thesis project investigating how low-oxygen zones in the ocean affect krill migration and their role in the carbon cycle. The project focuses on Northern krill in the Oslofjord, measuring behavioral and metabolic responses to hypoxia, including swimming behavior, feeding rates, and fecal pellet production. It also links these to carbon export and predator-prey dynamics. Students can choose between a focus on behavior (video analysis of swimming and vertical movement) or metabolism and carbon flux (feeding, pellet sinking speeds). Fieldwork includes cruises and work at the Drøbak field station, with optional training in acoustic data analysis. The project is part of a larger collaboration on ocean oxygen loss and zooplankton, and is flexible to the student's interests.
