KRICT dry-cathode additive boosts EV battery power density by 166% in tests
interestingengineering.comSouth Korean researchers at KRICT say a dry-cathode additive can fix the ion pile-up that limits thick EV battery electrodes. Adding 0.5 percent graphitic carbon nitride by weight to a 68-micrometer cathode cut the energy needed for lithium-ion movement by 56 percent and lifted high-rate discharge capacity from 58.8 to 156.2 mAh/g, a 166 percent gain. Pouch cells using the dry cathode kept 81.3 percent of capacity after 600 cycles. The process matters beyond the lab. Dry electrode manufacturing removes toxic solvents and large drying ovens, which lowers factory energy use and floor space. The team says the additive is a poor conductor, so dosage and pore structure have to be balanced carefully. Pilot production data is still needed to confirm yields and cost savings, but the approach targets a real bottleneck in energy-dense batteries.
