Researchers from KIMS and KERI in South Korea have created a new dry electrode manufacturing process for EV batteries that does not use PTFE, a binder known to degrade battery life and face environmental restrictions. The team reshaped graphite particles into spherical granules and used a CMC-SBR binder system already common in commercial batteries. This design improves lithium-ion flow, enabling faster charging and better performance in thick electrodes, which can boost energy density. The dry electrode method reduces manufacturing costs and carbon emissions by eliminating liquid solvents and drying steps. Because the binder system is already proven in existing production lines, the technology could be adopted more quickly for EVs and energy storage systems. The research was published in Energy Storage Materials and marks a step toward more sustainable battery production.
