Korea Zinc has signed a 20-year agreement to purchase 11 GWh of solar electricity per year from solar farms in Gangwon, Gyeonggi, and North Gyeongsang provinces. The power will be supplied through Hanwha Shinhan Terawatt Hour, a partnership in which Korea Zinc holds a 33.3% stake. Deliveries start in December and will run for two decades. The company expects this switch to cut its carbon emissions by about 4,200 tons annually, roughly equal to the emissions from 2,100 passenger cars. The 11 GWh is enough to power about 3,000 households for a year. Korea Zinc also plans to expand its clean energy mix with wind, green hydrogen, and green ammonia. It is exploring converting Australian green hydrogen into ammonia for use in Korea, and eventually shifting the Onsan Smelter to clean energy.
