A Korean testing lab that started with fire safety is now handling some of the practical risks tied to decarbonization. The Disaster Prevention Research Institute in Yeoju runs crash tests on EV batteries, including bottom impacts from curbs and potholes, then soaks damaged packs in salt water to check for delayed thermal runaway. It also operates a rotor sail test facility at Hanwha Ocean in Geoje, where wind-assisted ship propulsion is expected to cut fuel use and carbon emissions by 6-8%.
