Kobe Steel reported a 23 percent drop in production-related carbon emissions for fiscal year 2025 compared with fiscal year 2013. Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions came to 14.9 million metric tons of CO2, down from 15.4 million tons in fiscal 2024. More than 90 percent of those emissions come from steelmaking, and the company is targeting a 30 percent reduction by fiscal 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. The emissions cut is tied to measures like hot briquetted iron made via the MIDREX process, plus plans to expand biomass, scrap melting, and electric arc furnace capacity. The stock gained 1.56 percent to JPY 2,024 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange following the update. Still, quarterly results were weaker, with operating profit down 34.8 percent and a loss in the steel business, so the market is weighing environmental progress against near-term earnings.
