KMA projects most of Korean Peninsula will become subtropical by 2080 under high carbon emissions
dongascience.comA new analysis from the Korea Meteorological Administration shows that under high carbon emission scenarios, nearly all of the Korean Peninsula except inland Gangwon Province could shift to a subtropical climate by the late 21st century. The study examined data from 66 weather stations from 1981 to 2025 and found annual mean temperatures rising by 0.3 degrees Celsius per decade. The analysis uses the Trewartha climate classification, which defines subtropical as having at least eight months with mean temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius. Already, 17 locations including coastal cities and inland areas show subtropical traits. Under the low emission scenario SSP1-2.6, subtropical expansion remains limited to southern regions. But under high emission scenarios SSP5-8.5 and SSP3-7.0, most of the country would shift to subtropical conditions after 2080. This shift would affect ecosystems, crop zones, animal habitats, and fish populations. The KMA says the climate crisis is already visible through more frequent heat waves, heavy rainfall, and drought. The findings underscore the importance of emissions reduction pathways in determining future climate outcomes for the region.
