KiwiRail Sustainability Report: Rail Freight Cuts Customer Emissions by 144,000 Tonnes
business.scoop.co.nzKiwiRail has published its first standalone sustainability report, covering FY26. The headline number is that rail freight customers avoided almost 144,000 tonnes of CO2e by shipping by rail instead of other modes. KiwiRail also cut its own Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 24% against a FY19 baseline, although the report says the main driver was the move from a three ship to a two ship Interislander fleet. The report includes independent verification of KiwiRail's Steel Wheels emissions data through Toitū Envirocare Carbon Compatible Reporting status. That matters for freight customers who need reliable numbers for their own sustainability disclosures. The company also commissioned 11 electric shunt vehicles, launched its first Biodiversity Action Plan, and put nearly 400 frontline leaders through safety training. Severe weather remains the biggest operational risk. KiwiRail acknowledges that adaptation across a national network needs ongoing investment and collaboration. The report sets a baseline for future sustainability reporting and gives a clearer picture of where rail fits in New Zealand's lower emissions transition.
