The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has launched the Hydrogen Integration Platform (HIP) on its Campus North. The facility links demonstration plants across the entire hydrogen value chain including electrolysis, liquefaction, storage, transport, and end use. At its core is Germany's largest non-commercial hydrogen liquefaction system with a capacity of 50 kg per day. Researchers will test how hydrogen technologies can work together reliably and efficiently in a future carbon neutral energy system. A key feature is a test track for a hybrid energy pipeline that combines liquid hydrogen with superconducting power cables. This setup aims to transfer large amounts of energy over long distances with minimal loss, connecting wind and solar parks to industrial facilities or logistics centers. The platform also includes test environments for energy storage, real time grid simulations, and hydrogen drive units for rail transport. KIT says the facility will help bring new hydrogen technologies to market faster by testing them under realistic conditions before commercial deployment.

KIT is putting together a full hydrogen testbed from electrolysis to liquefaction to transport. The hybrid pipeline combining liquid hydrogen with superconducting cables is the most interesting part. If that works at scale it could change how we move energy from remote solar and wind sites.

50 kg per day is still lab scale. The hybrid pipeline concept is neat but superconducting cables at cryogenic temps over long distances have huge cost and maintenance questions. Would like to see the projected cost per km versus conventional HVDC.

The hybrid pipeline concept is interesting but I wonder about the real world economics. Liquid hydrogen at 20 K plus superconducting cables. That is a lot of cooling infrastructure. For it to beat HVDC plus separate hydrogen pipeline the numbers need to work at scale. Would love to see a cost comparison.
