Kerala and World Bank plan carbon credit scheme for farmers under KERA project
newindianexpress.comKerala and the World Bank are designing a carbon credit programme for farmers who adopt sustainable practices. It would sit inside the Kerala Climate Resilient Agri-Value Chain Modernisation (KERA) project, a Rs 2,365 crore effort aimed at making agriculture more resilient to climate stress, improving supply chains, and supporting smallholders. A dedicated carbon cell in the Agriculture Department is proposed to run it. The plan is still in the proposal stage. Key details like verification, credit certification, and how payments reach farmers are not public yet. If those are handled well, the scheme could give farmers a real income stream while pushing practices that cut emissions or store carbon in soil. The World Bank team is reviewing sites in Kerala until October 13.
