Keppel Ltd. has started operations at Singapore's first hydrogen-compatible power plant, a 600 MW combined cycle gas turbine facility on Jurong Island. The plant can initially run on natural gas but is designed to blend up to 30% hydrogen by volume, with a pathway to 100% hydrogen as supply and infrastructure develop. This project is part of Singapore's broader strategy to reduce its power sector emissions while maintaining grid reliability. The plant uses Mitsubishi Power M701JAC gas turbines and includes a heat recovery steam generator for combined cycle efficiency. Keppel reports the facility will help displace older, less efficient oil-fired generation in the city-state. The hydrogen blending capability gives Singapore a flexible option to lower carbon intensity without waiting for full hydrogen infrastructure buildout. For carbon market participants, this project represents a concrete example of transitional gas infrastructure that can align with long-term decarbonization goals. The 30% hydrogen blend threshold is a practical near-term target that could generate verifiable emissions reductions if green hydrogen supply becomes available at scale in the region.
